Falling in love

I am falling in love again.

Not with Husby who last night blocked my kitchen sink, this morning slept in and this afternoon talked politics.

Not with my son who last night ate very sloppy Joe's, this morning melted my heart and this afternoon probably poo'ed a lot. (help me with that spelling - please!)

Not with my God who last night watched over me while Husby went out, this morning sat with me and taught me about my namesake and this afternoon kept me calm in the face of stupidity.

No, I am falling in love once more with the written word.

Since Toby has been born I have read very little that required actual concentration. Percy Jackson, the Twilight books that kind of thing. I was reading Slaughterhouse V when he was born and it took me months to finish that slim volume even though I tried to read while nursing.

Lately I have been reading once more on my lunch break at work, sitting in the car and taking in the midday fall air or the pitter patter of raindrops. We have no break room and I have yet to restore my office to it's post maternity leave order! It's a wonderful break and one I intend to cling to even as the snow falls - remind me of that in January!

This past weekend I finished reading the third volume of The Forsyte Saga and got to do one of my favourite things. Pace in front of my bookshelves and decide what to read next. This is a task I do not take lightly. My shelves are stocked equally with old friends and strangers so that I might choose according to mood and circumstance which world to indulge myself in next.

As I stood there looking at worlds awaiting I decided on something old, but old what? Old English and Dickensian? Old French and Dumas? Old American (tee hee) and Steinbeck? Though it may take me seven weeks of uninterrupted lunch breaks I made my choice...

Old Russian - Tolstoy - Anna Karenina.

I am on page 57 and am in love.

  1. I LOVE to pace in front of my bookshelves and pick my next read. It can take me a few days to decide. I get giddy when I finish a book and get to choose another. Sadly, my reading time is close to nil since the babe's arrival.

Funny, both you and McMel posted about reading today. :)
